During my life, I often found myself feeling isolated and unsure of how to navigate the world outside of my family’s home, school, work and sometimes even life! That’s where my mentors came in to my life. Some of them were my teachers, some of them were my family members and for the adult years I also worked with some coaches and business mentors. With their guidance and support, I have been able to develop important life skills and connect with professionals in various fields. Mentorship empowered me to reach my real potential with confidence and a sense of purpose. In this article, I want to share with you the benefits of all kind of mentorships and the different types of mentorship available for homeschooled children and parents. Whether you’re looking to learn a specific skill or simply connect with a positive adult influence, mentorship can offer invaluable opportunities for growth and development. So let’s explore how mentors can empower people to reach their full potential and thrive in the world around them.

Benefits of Mentorship

I know the importance of having a mentor in my life. Mentors serve as positive role models who provide guidance and direction through uncharted territory. They introduce us to new skills and connections that we may not have had access to otherwise. Whenever I am stuck in my life, lose my direction or if I see that my kid is stuck but and I feel like I’m not enough for them at that moment, I don’t even think one more moment if we need some additional help, I immediately search for my options to find the best mentor on that topic. Having a mentor is like having a compass; they help us navigate the complexities of life and provide us with a sense of direction. A good mentor can help us develop a strong sense of self-worth and confidence, which is essential for navigating the challenges of adolescence. Having a mentor who believes in us can make all the difference in our lives. With their guidance and support, we can become the best version of ourselves and achieve our full potential.

Types of Mentorship

Personally, I’ve found that there are different ways for someone to guide me in life. I’ve been fortunate to understand the benefits from my early ages and had change to experience most of them.
  • Traditional Mentorship

Traditional mentoring entails a one-on-one relationship between a mentor and a mentee, in which the mentor uses their knowledge and experience to offer the mentee direction, advice, and support. We had mentors in the school that I could go and talk to and I was going to them whenever I need.
  • Group Mentorship
Group mentoring is a form of mentoring in which one mentor works with multiple mentees at the same time to offer advice and support in a variety of areas of interest. The benefits of group mentoring include the opportunity for collective learning, the sharing of experiences, and the support of the other people. I have joined some during my college years and it also helped me for the belonging feeling.
  • Reverse Mentorship
A person who is younger or has less experience takes on the role of a mentor to guide and share their insights with an individual who is more senior or has more experience. This is a unique form of mentoring known as “reverse mentoring.” The practice of reverse mentoring encourages the sharing of different points of view and the acquisition of knowledge across generations. I have never practised it formally but I guess it’s the same thing when my parents ask my opinion now to have more point of views.
  • Virtual Mentorship
Mentoring can now be done virtually thanks to recent developments in technology; this can take place remotely through the use of online platforms, video calls, emails, or online chat messages. Without regard to physical location, individuals can connect with one another and obtain direction through the use of virtual mentoring. Now I’m working with a life and business coach to be able to balance my work and family life.
  • Peer Mentorship
A mentoring relationship between two or more people who are at a similar point in their respective personal or professional journeys can be described as mentoring by peers. It doesn’t need to be formal at all and it exists during our whole life. Peers lend each other support, share their knowledge, and offer each other encouragement and accountability regardless of age.
  • Informal Mentorship
Mentoring in an informal setting mentoring in an informal setting takes place naturally as a result of the interactions and relationships that develop in the course of daily life. It could involve seeking advice or direction from a person who is not formally designated as a mentor but who does possess the necessary knowledge and experience. Parents can also serve as mentors for their own children or other teens. This type of mentorship is particularly important for homeschooled children who may not have access to other adult role models. However, parents should carefully consider whether they have the necessary skills and temperament to be effective mentors. Parental integrity is very important to be self-aware and recognize their own limitations.

How Can Homeschooling Teach the Art of Letting Go?

Homeschooling during the art of letting go can be a transformative experience. By allowing children to take charge of their own education, homeschooling enables them to explore their passions and discover new ones. It encourages independence and self-motivation, teaching kids how to let go of external expectations and embrace their own unique path of learning. This approach fosters creativity and resilience, nurturing individuals who are confident in their ability to let go of societal norms and follow their dreams.

Skills to Learn with Mentors

Exploring new areas of knowledge with a trusted guide has been like navigating uncharted waters with a seasoned captain. I’ve found that mentors can provide invaluable support in learning skills like animal training, fitness, and hair styling. With their guidance, I’ve been able to delve into the art of cooking and learn new techniques that have not only nourished my body but also my soul. My mentor had told me before that I can dream more and now I’m living in that dream. Through mentorship, I’ve gained a sense of confidence and self-assurance that will serve me well in all areas of my life.
